What is a Home-Based Baker Anyway?

There is a big difference between baking cookies, cakes and pies for your family, friends and co-workers and baking items in larger quantities with the intention of selling them to make a profit. While some bakers simply bake for the fun of it, there are others out there who want to do more with their craft.

So, what is a home-based baker? A home-based bakery is anyone who wants to prepare baked goods from home and sell to the general public. Now with that said, remember you are first and foremost a “Baker”. It’s just that simple. You just happen to be operating a small bakery from your home; selling a limited number of products. Home-based bakeries are not a new phenomenon and there are many home-based bakers out there. There is Diane Purkey’s Maine’s Cakes and Cookies, and Lilian Chavira’s Gellocake, and Reginald Savage, who created Azurelise chocolate truffles. Reginald is located in Raleigh, North Carolina and has been featured on FoodTV Network; no he’s not a baker, but he is a candy maker. Home food processors are everywhere and whether you’re making cakes, pies, cookies or candy you are still a professional, selling quality products to the public!

When life hands you lemons, simply make lemonade or at least a lemon chess pie. Years ago, a national television host spotlighted a guest who was unemployed, down on his luck and in a terrible state of affairs. He said, “No one would give me a job. They would not answer my phone calls, or review my resume. I’m a decent enough guy.” He was showcased on the program because life had handed him lemons, lots and lots of lemons; and what did he do about it? He made lemonade. He decided to create a new reality and start some type of business that ultimately led him to wealth, peace and happiness. He did not stop there however, he went on to say “I look at people who are struggling to make ends meet differently now. I give people the respect and dignity of mind I was not given.” If you really want to start a bakery, start one!
