When confronted with the reality that they could not bake from home because they had pets, Pam Ray, Teresa Hunt, Diane Willis of Twisted Sister Barkery redefined their goal and started making all natural, preservative free dog treats with no artificial flavors or colors.
Choosing which treats are best for your dog is a personal decision, since most dogs will eat anything they are given, but when it comes to their health, it’s up to the dog’s owner to control which foods and treats are most beneficial.
If a dog hates a treat, chances are he will drop it to the ground, sniff it and walk away. This is not the case with products from the Twisted Sisters Barkery. Pam, Teresa and Diance, three life long friends describe their recipe for success as “One cup passion for baking, plus two cups puppy love.”
Their unique treat flavors include “passion fruit, coconut, sweet potato, tomato and parsley to name a few, and all treats are slow baked and basted from their home to yours, ready to tempt even the most finicky fido.”
The idea of a small business actually started decades ago when Pam Ray, Teresa Hunt, Diane Willis, friends for nearly 30 years decided to turn a frequently talked about venture into a passion. Earlier this year the trio gathered knowledge from a course for food entrepreneurs offered by the Wake Public School System Lifelong Learning Program laying the foundation for what would eventually become the Twisted Sisters Barkery.
The journey was not easy since the timing and circumstances never really felt quite right; but as the years passed, their restless urge grew and ultimately the sisters decided to put their plan into action.
The Twisted Sisters Barkery would be “a life’s journey fulfilled,” and it would be all about their dogs Pru, Pearl, Katie and Perdy; instrumental in the testing and tasting.
According to Diane, finally there would be homemade “treats void of added sugars, salts and preservatives; freshly baked and void of never ending shelf lives. Treats with ingredients that can be easily identified and pronounce such as sweet potato, rice, cinnamon and honey.”
Today Twisted Sister’s home-baked treats can be found at the local farmer’s market and special events around the Raleigh area sold by what the sisters like to call a “barkers dozen.”
The K-9 signature flavors include, “Twenty-Furr K Goldfish with natural aged cheddar, the Banana Blue Moon Pie with banana and coconut, the Hawaiian Barkquet with passion fruit and honey, the Veggiemite Bite with rosemary and sage, the Fruitie Nilla Woofer with cranberry and orange, the Nacho Nibbler with cheddar and tomato, the Barkanator with chicken stock and carrot, the Howling Hound Bone with sweet potato and cinnamon, and lastly, the Nutter Bone with peanut butter, cinnamon and honey.” If you are interested in ordering from the Twisted Sisters Barkery or would like to learn more about them email twistedsistersbarkery@yahoo.com and follow them on Facebook.
