Everyone at HomebasedBaking.com is in the research business. We are constantly looking for the next “sweet” fascination. Will cupcakes reign supreme or will pies, cookies, macaroons or will dark chocolate bars take front and center stage? Seriously, I don’t see cupcakes going away any time soon. They are the perfect little flavor package that can be both savory and/or sweet. Are you looking for some cupcake and icing combinations? Take a peek at these. This lists can out in July 2010 but many of these flavor combinations are still popular today; plus I challenge you to let your creative juices flow and come up with some additional tantalizing flavor combinations. Recently I was at a local mall (Northlake) in Charlotte, North Carolina and there was a cupcake kiosk, 1Simply Divine Sweets, selling cupcake flavors that included cookie dough, French toast bacon, Cotton Candy, and a host of more than twenty more flavors. I am not sure a kiosk is the best location for a cupcake bakery, but it’s a start for Yaschica Sloan Mills, home-based bakery owner. So where are we headed in 2013? One thing is for sure, consumers want gluten-free, “natural” ingredients (whatever that means) and clean labels, namely foods without additives, artificial sweeteners, flavors and all those fillers we can’t pronounce. It really would be great if we could get away from all those sweets and get back to the days of baking healthy breads like those featured in the original version of Laurel’s Kitchen Cookbook. Did it really ever catch on, or is it me living in the past, wishing and hoping! Personally, I prefer the 2003 version of Laurel’s book which is rarely available in hard back, but available on Amazon.com in paperback. This is virgin bread baking at it’s best and it’s my hope that someone will bring back the dying art of baking bread from scratch, not from a box mix; using these homemade breads to make lovely open face sandwiches served with the best scratch soups known to mankind. Okay, too much? Well, for now, it looks like not much will be changing when it comes to baking trends. Like the economy, baking is stagnant and predictable; and cupcakes will continue to be the light at the end of the tunnel.

Have you ever thought about donating services or products to silent auctions? This provides free exposure all while supporting your community. A silent auction is a fundraising technique frequently used at charity events. Remember the chocolate pie in the recent move "The Help" that was purchased by Miss Hilly Holbrook's mother Miss Walters. It differs from the typical auction conducted by an auctioneer who calls out the prices for items and then takes the raised hands or paddles of people as bids at a specific price.
